FEMSA the company that owns Oxxo, has recently been singled out for neglecting its control of waste and waste, which seems to go against its commitment to sustainability. In a world that increasingly focuses on the circular economy, it is important that companies assume their responsibility in waste management and environmental protection.
According to FEMSA's sustainability, during 2021, 2.56% of cardboard, 18.5% of metals and 31% of the PET resin used in its bottles were recycled. However, in the case of plastic, the recycling percentage was 78.8%. These figures indicate that there is still much work to do to achieve a truly circular economy.
Carlos Álvarez, member of the Technical Advisory Middle East Mobile Number List Committee of the UNDPemarnat Waste with POPs Project, points out that FEMSA does not comply with the appropriate protocol to dispose of the refrigerators it uses in its Oxxo stores. According to Álvarez, FEMSA must dispose of at least 150 refrigerators nationwide each week, but these are not taken to specialized centers authorized by Semarnat for proper destruction. Instead, they are delivered to scrap dealers, who only separate the different components to sell them as "old iron." The problem is that the gas contained in these refrigerators is released into the atmosphere, without considering its high polluting power.
Why is FEMSA's sustainability important?
It is important that FEMSA and other companies assume their responsibility in protecting the environment and the circular economy. This involves complying with appropriate protocols for waste management, including the destruction of materials that contain polluting gases. It is also essential that companies are transparent about their recycling figures and commit to increasing them significantly.
On the other hand, it is necessary for environmental authorities in Mexico to enforce existing standards and be more rigorous in their application. If companies know that compliance will not be enforced, they are less likely to take responsibility for protecting the environment.
In conclusion, sustainability is a crucial issue for the future of our planet. FEMSA and other companies have an important role to play in protecting the environment and in the circular economy. It is necessary that they assume their responsibility in managing waste and reducing their environmental impact. At the same time, it is important that environmental authorities in Mexico are more rigorous in the application of standards and demanding in compliance with environmental commitments. Together we can work to create a more sustainable and balanced world.
